Bandai first released the original Tamagotchi in Japan on November 23rd, 1996. Soon after, a second version referred to as the "New Species Discovered!! Tamagotchi\" (\"Shinshu Hakken!! Tamagotchi\" in Japan) was produced, featuring new designs, colors, characters, and a new game. The two versions -- differentiated officially as \"Generation 1\" and \"Generation 2\" -- are colloquially referred to as \"P1\" and \"P2\" by fans. The original Tamagotchi introduced and codified many of the core features and software still used on almost all Tamagotchi virtual pets to this day.
